Wilfred (Willie) Gordon
Nugal-Warra Elder, Wilfred (Willie) Gordon, lives in Hope Vale, a small Aboriginal community in Queensland’s Far North. He trained as a boiler maker, and then spent many years in the health sector before starting his own tourism business. Guurrbi Tours was launched in May 2003, and in 2006 was nominated by ATS Pacific and American Express as one of Australia’s Ultimate Must-Do Experiences.
Dr. Judy Bennett
Dr. Judy Bennett came to Australia as a PhD student after 25 years in the tourism industry. She came to Cape York in April 2002, and worked with Willie to help him develop Guurrbi Tours, whilst collaborating with him in a participatory action research project, critically assessing how they went about it so that others could benefit from their experience. After the launch of the business she continued to assist him, and in 2005 became a partner in the business. In 2006 she and Willie launched The Bama Way, a cultural trail through S.E. Cape York linking Guurrbi Tours with two other Aboriginal-owned tour businesses.
